Orgal HT 465 is a hydrophobically modified alkali swellable (HASE) type anionic thickener. It is designed to give a lower cost alternative to cellulosic thickeners. The major area of application is mainly indoor / outdoor matt emulsion paints. However, Orgal HT 465 may also be used for thickening other latex compounds for textiles, carpet, paper, etc. In the emulsion paint formulations, Orgal HT 465 can be used in combination with cellulosic thickeners or alone. It provides paints with excellent roller spattering resistance and resistance to microbe and enzyme attack. Ease of incorporation and the possibility of post addition are other advantages using this product. Orgal HT 465 has a very pseudoplastic rheology, high in-can structure and good sag resistance.
Viscosity is developed by neutralization to a pH of 7.0 to 10.0. The thickener can be added to the mill-base, to the letdown or as a post addition if the medium is sufficiently alkaline and if sufficient mixing is available.
Additional base is used to adjust pH. The prediluted and neutralized form could be added as well. The amount needed in paint formulations must be determined by lab trials, eventhough it can be stated that the usual practice is to use between 0,4 – 1,0% either alone or in combination with cellulosics. In all cases, it is recommended to add Orgal HT 465 diluted 1:1 with water.
